A. Mohammed Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

A. Mohammed, a Canadian, won the country’s first Olympic medal in a long distance track event when he placed second in the 5000-meter race at Tokyo 2020. A few days prior to that, he had placed sixth in the Olympic 10,000-meter run, Canada’s highest Olympic finish in that event since 1912.

In the 5000-meter event in Rio 2016, A. Mohammed placed an impressive fourth, a best-ever finish for Canada. He had originally placed fifth, but he was penalised for stepping on the track’s inner line; however, the Jury of Appeal quickly reinstated him to his original position.

When A. Mohammed earned bronze in the 5000-meter event at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, he became the first Canadian to ever win a medal in a world championship in a long distance track event. In addition to his sixth-place finish at the World Championships, he also set a new national record in the 10,000m with a time of 26 minutes, 59.35 seconds.

In July of 2020, on one of A. Mohammed’s very few opportunities to compete, he ran a 5,000-meter race in a time of 12 minutes, 47.20 seconds, setting a new national record. A. Mohammed competed in the Olympic Games for the first time in London in 2012, in the 10,000-meter event. He placed 18th. He finally broke through the following year, as he placed ninth in the longest track event at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow.

As of that point in time, A. Mohammed’s finish was the best ever by a Canadian in the 10,000m at the World Championships, though he has since surpassed it. At the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, A. Mohammed triumphed in the 10,000-meter event, taking home the gold medal.

When he ran the 5000 metres in 13 minutes and 10.0 seconds in a Diamond League race in Brussels in September 2015, he set a new Canadian record that had stood for 17 years. At the Prefontaine classic in Eugene, Oregon in May 2016, A. Mohammed ran a personal best of 13 minutes and 1.74 seconds, shattering his previous record by more over eight seconds. He previously set a national record in February while running the 3000 metres indoors, setting a new standard by nine seconds.

A. Mohammed Competed in the 5000 and 10,000 Metre Events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, and Won Silver in Both.

A. Mohammed won the 5000-meter event in the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships and the 10,000-meter event at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton. Also, he holds the junior record in the 10,000 metres in Canada.

In April of 2012, he set a new personal record of 27:34.64 for the 10,000 metres. A. Mohammed finished third in the 10,000 metre event at the 2014 NCAA Championships, earning him the title of Big Ten Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year during his time at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
