To begin with, it would be more harder to qualify. C. Xue, who is 32 years old, and his partner Xinxin Wang haven’t played a lot of matches on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. Instead, they decided to focus on the Asian Continental Cup Finals, where they quickly realised the odds were stacked against them after losing their first match.

Injuries to teammates Shuhui Wen and Jingzhe Wang on the first day of the event left C. Xue and Wang needing to win six matches in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, to qualify for Tokyo.

They actually did that, but that didn’t make things any simpler. When the Chinese duo finally got back to their homes, they were quarantined for another two weeks, meaning they couldn’t get any training in before the Olympics.

A challenging final month, C. Xue thought. The court was unavailable for practise. There was no place for us to train together, so we each did our own thing in our rooms. The wall was our only “partner” at the time, and it was all we could do to retain our touch on the ball.

Last Words

We were only given a week to prepare for our trip to Tokyo after we were released from quarantine.
