Explain who Candy Montgomery is.
In the United States of America, you’ll find a housewife by the name of Candy Montgomery, formerly known as Candace Wheeler.
The wife of her lover, Betty Gore, accused her of murder. She used an axe that was three feet long to attack Gore 41 times. On June 13, 1980, the aforementioned incident occurred in Whylie, Texas.
During the incident, Candy was 30 years old. Pat Montgomery, an electrical engineer, became her spouse. There were two of her offspring: a son and a daughter. She was a faithful member of Lucas’s First United Methodist Church, just like any other Christian wife.

Elementary school teacher Betty Gore was discovered dead by her two neighbours, Lester Gaylor and Richard Parker. Her body was found at her Texas house with 41 axe cuts, and the murder weapon was recovered from the scene. Then, what transpired?
After meeting at a religious event, Candy and Betty Gore quickly became very good friends. Alicia and her two kids and husband Allan were neighbours, and Alicia was having an affair with Candy.
While Gore’s husband, Allan, was away, their relationship turned sour. When he tried calling his wife and got no response, he asked the neighbours to try to make contact on his behalf. It was too late by the time they broke inside the residence.
An incomplete and disfigured body of Betty was found. Bethany, who had been sleeping in a separate room in a crib, woke up and began to cry. Several forensic pieces of evidence, including fingerprints and footprints, link directly to Candy. On June 27th, police made an arrest on suspicion of Candy.
The Self-Defense Pleading of Candy
In October 1980, Candy Montgomery went on trial for the murder of Betty Gore, claiming that she had acted in self-defense. The McKinney trial lasted for eight days, and the jury was comprised of nine women and three men.
Rewinding to the day of the crime, it all began when Candy promised to drive Betty’s older daughter, Alisa, to her swing lesson the following day. While on her way to pick up Alisa’s bikini from the Gore’s, Candy and the Gore’s wife got into an argument about Candy’s extramarital affair with Allan.
Robert Udashen, Candy’s defence counsel, said that on the day of the confrontation, Betty retrieved an axe from her garage and attacked Candy. The fight ended when Candy overcharged Betty, killing her.
Postmortem examination revealed, however, that Betty had been injured by an axe when she was out of it. After Gore had tried to hit her with an axe, Betty said she felt impelled to wield one herself. Before going to trial, Montgomery took a polygraph, which showed that she was telling the truth.
However, prosecutor Tom O’Connell presented convincing evidence that she had an opportunity to flee the scene. He argued that the case did not include self-defense since an attack count of 41 was unreasonable.
At trial, Candy Montgomery maintained her innocence, but on October 30, 1980, District Judge Tom Ryan issued a not guilty verdict.
Those with rational minds were shocked by this verdict. As Candy left the courthouse after her acquittal, many protesters yelled, “Murderer! Murderer!” in response to the judgement. The father of Betty said:
Justice will be done, as far as I’m concerned. What she has to accept is… I can’t say that I’m satisfied with the outcome. There is no way for us to ever know what happened.
What Happened to Candy Montgomery?
Candy was quizzed on why she continued to have an adulterous affair despite her seemingly perfect family life. According to her, there were no feelings involved in her affair with Allan.
To spice up her “extremely boring” marriage to Pat, that’s all. She added that they were committed to staying with their partners.
Though she might be found not guilty, Candy would feel guilty about the incident forever. She changed her identity to Candace Wheeler and now provides therapeutic services to adults and teenagers.
Pat and her husband split after the trial and she relocated to Georgia. According to informed sources, Candy is still a resident of Texas.
