When Breaking Made its Debut at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympics Games

International Dance Day is being observed today, April 29, and what better way to mark the occasion than by recalling the Youth Olympic debut of the sport of breaking at Buenos Aires 2018?

The Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024 will be the first time breaking (or breakdancing, as it is more commonly known) will be on the schedule.

But for 12 young B-Boys and 12 young B-Girls, the 2018 YOG was their chance to shine on the biggest stage in the world as breaking made waves in Argentina’s capital.

Urban Culture at its Finest

Since its inception in the 1970s on the streets of New York, breaking has come a long way. However, the sport still retains a lot of its original flair and swagger.

At Buenos Aires 2018, two international DJs provided the music as the best up-and-coming artists.

From across the world performed in a specially constructed urban park in Puerto Madero, the city’s centre.

Hometown B-Girl Vale (Iris Gonzales) was intensely aware of this because Argentina, which is more well-known for the sad tones of the tango, was suddenly at the centre of an urban dance revolution.

Conclusion

One of the rising stars at the Buenos Aires YOG may have been more brilliant than the others.

B-Girl Ram (Ramu Kawai) of Japan won all of her rounds in the women’s category to earn the gold medal, and she then triumphed in the mixed competition.

Ram, a member of the renowned Floorriorz breaking team, recognised that breaking had the potential to encourage young women all over the world to follow their aspirations.

Many more breaking stars will do this at Paris 2024.
