How To Make Jello Shots

Vodka Jelly Shots are an easy-to-make, crowd-pleasing party cocktail that can be customised to your guests’ tastes. To avoid running out, make a lot.

Jelly Shots: Why They’re Awesome

Without a doubt, Jelly shots are the most popular drink at any college party. My pals and I had been drinking vodka jelly shots regularly since we were in our twenties. On Saturday evenings at my friend Chris’s house, we’d cook them, and then we’d go tubing on the Salt River, and they seemed to show up at every party.

What could possibly be bad about jelly shots?! They’re simple to whip up, are universally well-received, and gain an extra dose of zaniness from their rainbow of hues. Make some room in the fridge, because we’re about to start blending.

This is a standard recipe for vodka jelly shots. We aren’t going to start from scratch and use plain gelatin. To prepare these jell o shots, we’re utilising flavoured gelatin mix from Jell-O boxes.

Although cocktail-themed jelly shots are delicious, when the occasion calls for something more traditional, I always reach for these jelly shots made with vodka. For this recipe, your only real choice is the flavour of Jell-O (and vodka) you’d want to use. It’s time to make a choice.

How to Make Vodka Jelly Shots and What You’ll Need

WATER: These shots require water, just like ordinary jelly.

JELLO MIX: The jelly in this recipe comes in 3-ounce boxes. Choose from a wide variety of flavours. If the largest boxes you can get are 6 ounces, you’ll need to quadruple the other ingredients and stock up on more cups.

VODKA: Jelly shots made with regular vodka require regular vodka. (Below, I list some of my favourite flavoured vodkas.) But a decent mid-range vodka works well in jelly shots.

I’m not referring to the $35-a-bottle variety. That’s what you use for vodka sodas and martinis. A bottle of Absolut or Smirnoff, which costs around $12, will do the trick. Don’t go for the cheap, large plastic bottle at the back of the store. The shots of cheap vodka will hit you like a tonne of bricks. You prefer vodka that is less harsh.

Jelly Shot Recipes:

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Then, to a 4-cup glass measuring cup or a medium mixing bowl, add the contents of a 3-ounce box of gelatin mix. When the water comes to a boil, pour it over the jelly and stir it to dissolve. Whisk the ingredients together after adding the vodka and cold water to the bowl.
  2. Without their covers, arrange the plastic jelly shot cups on a baking sheet. (This makes repositioning the photos much simpler.) The jelly should be chilled for at least 2 hours in the fridge after being mixed.
  3. When the jelly shots have set, cover them with the lids to keep them fresh and transport them easily. The shots are delicious either on their own or with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
